Derek challenges us to think beyond the device and begin designing for context.

Say hi:

Content in context is king

Truly responsive design goes way beyond layout and fluid grids. Content, context, and behaviour also come together in ways that impact the experience of the people using your site. Considering the needs of the people using the site, when they’re using it, and how they’re using it lets you create sites that take responsive to a whole new level. You already factor in variable devices and capabilities, but looping in context and the fine art of anticipation can help you deliver a more efficient, thoughtful user experience for everyone. Sweet.

Beyond responsive: Accessible design for every device

  • Wednesday, April 1, 2015, 9:00 am
  • Location: Main ballroom

Responsive design continues to grow in popularity. Its foundation of fluid grids, flexible images and media queries sets the stage for creating accessible sites and applications that work everywhere. But in order to unleash the true power of responsive design, we need to find ways of ensuring that responsive sites work not only on a multitude of devices, but also for a wide range of abilities.

In this day-long session, Derek will guide you through a hands-on process to help your designs become more flexible and more usable for everyone.

  • You’ll leave with both the foundation of responsive design and the latest thinking on how responsive design and accessibility work together.
  • You’ll learn the ways where the two concepts even conflict with one another, and how to apply both for a greater overall user experience for everyone.
  • BYOD (bring your own device) and headphones.

You’ll learn:

  • How to jack up the basic level of accessibility that responsive design already brings
  • How to apply different responsive design implementation methodologies
  • How to test responsive design patterns for accessibility issues and find ways to solve (or avoid) them
  • How to make concrete plans for testing your own applications and sites
